ebooks > covers
Early 2009 I had the opportunity to illustrate and design the cover for the ebook Serial, a terrifying tale of hitchhiking gone terribly wrong, written by Blake Crouch and Jack Kilborn. Available from amazon.com it quickly became a #1 Amazon Kindle Bestseller, with well over 250,000 downloads and counting.
Following Serial’s success Blake asked me to design covers for some of his short stories making them available to anyone already interested in his work, but also as a gateway for people wanting to get a sniff of his writing without having to buy a novel. The covers I created each reveal what I believed to be the heart of the story, an illustration/design that conveys something pivotal.
To achieve such covers - covers that are relevant and resonate, I read the short story or (most of) the novel first. Thankfully I love reading and I’m not partial to a specific genre either. Reading an author’s work has proved to be very helpful, not only to achieve a level of understanding and trust with the author, but to create a style that suits both the author, his work, and the audience the book is intended for.
I’m proud to say I have created covers for the following authors:
Douglas Walker
Dinah Swan
Nick Sireau
Traci Hohenstein
Michael Wallace
Tucker Mayer
This is a collection of the covers I’ve made. It doesn’t include all, a few are not yet available online, and there is one I created knowing it had already been commissioned (but I couldn’t help myself and I like it).

Praise
“Jeroen ten Berge is a blast to work with. The care and consideration he gives to the art that expresses the story is evident in everything he does. Simply put, this man will help you sell books.”
Blake Crouch
“Jeroen ten Berge has a remarkable talent for creating covers that transcend the important functional requirements. I don’t know how he does what he does, but I do know what it’s like to have my words wrapped in covers that attract or repel potential readers. Whether readers should or shouldn’t judge books by their covers is a moot point, because they do – we all do. Jeroen’s skills – and his empathy for and interest in the content of my books – are hugely valuable.”
Simon Hertnon
“Fast, professional, extremely talented, and a pleasure to work with. Highly recommended.”
JA Konrath
“In the ten years I worked in advertising, I can count on one hand the number of times I collaborated with someone as talented, dedicated, and bold-visioned as Jeroen. He does a seemingly obvious and yet incredibly rare thing—he translates the spirit and tone of the story into an image. All that and a joy to work with, too. Bravo.”
Marcus Sakey
“Jeroen ten Berge’s designs for my book, Dating My Vibrator (and other true fiction), are wonderful. I like them so much, I had a difficult time deciding which to use. Ultimately, I hope to use both. Jeroen read my work thoroughly and captured the essence of my stories through his design using humor, taste and powerful visuals. He is professional, imaginative, and delivered the work quickly. Bottom line: the response to my book cover has been extremely positive. Thank you so much, Jeroen. I can’t wait to see what you create for my next book.”
